Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2019 Honda Passport

Hello neighbors. It's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at the Primus IQ Proportional Brake Controller on a 2019 Honda Passport. Now this is a proportional brake controller and what that means is, as you slow down with your vehicle, the trailer's gonna do the same and once you fine tune it with your gain, you should be able to get those brakes to work well with the vehicle, making a smooth operation. Now what's nice too, is you can actually have proportioning with your manual slide. So if the trailer's starting to get a little bit swirly and swaying around, you can lightly put the brakes on and then if you really need them to slow down you can push a little bit more and you're gonna get that actual full level of gain. So and if you ever need more, you can just simply turn your knob and you can see that the gain actually changes there. more

That means that there is an inertia sensor inside that will detect the stopping force so the brakes can then apply harder or less depending upon how quickly we're stopping. more

Because there's an internal inertia sensor, that's going to detect the deceleration of our vehicle and apply the brakes accordingly to our trailer.Like most brake controllers, this is going to have a manual override button. It's going to have a lever here at the bottom and if we sweep it over to the left, we can see that it's going to manually apply the brakes even if I'm not pushing on the brake pedal on my car. Now this is going to come in handy if your trailer starts to sway, when you're going down the road and you need to slow it down without hitting the brakes on your vehicle. more

Today in our 2017 Honda Ridgeline, we'll be installing the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller. Part number 90195. To ease our installation we'll be using the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers, part number 3070-P. Now the reason you want a brake controller is if you have a trailer that has electric trailer brakes and your vehicle doesn't have a brake controller, you won't be able to use those trailer brakes. When you have a brake controller installed you'll be able to take advantage of those trailer brakes and be able to slow down your trailer a lot more efficiently and putting less strain on your vehicle's brakes. Also, in some areas of the country, they do require functioning trailer brakes on trailers over a certain load, so that's just something to keep in mind. All right here's what our brake controller looks like installed. more

To ease our installation we'll be using the wiring adapter for electric brake controllers for Honda vehicles, part number 3070-P. The P3 can handle it without any issue. Now if we press this button here, the little book button on the bottom right, that gets us to our setup menu. You can change your brake type, electric, hydraulic, over electric, but we'll just leave it on electric because that's what most trailer brakes are. more

If you're looking for a simple, easy-to-use brake controller, this is definitely going to be a good option. The ease of use is also something that makes this one different from some of the other ones that are out there. Unlike some of the other brake controllers out there, there aren't a whole lot of different buttons in order to change settings. You've just got a couple dials on the side. In order to use this brake controller, the first thing I want to point out is, right up here we've got this little green LED light. more
